Language Evaluation Form
Form for applicants who have not completed the minimum required years of academic study of the language to indicate proof of equivalent competency.

Application Materials to be Submitted
Be sure to review the Grant Guidelines before submitting an application for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship.  Applicants for Blakemore Refresher Grants should click here to review that program's requirements and the list of documents which should accompany a Refresher Grant application.

For the Blakemore Freeman Fellowships, a complete application consists of the following items:

 
bulletCompleted application form
 
bulletEssay (three to four pages in length, double-spaced) discussing:
bulletApplicant's academic, professional or business background
bulletPrior study and use of the language and involvement with the Asian country
bulletCareer objectives and how the language will be used to achieve them
 
bulletTwo recent letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with applicant's academic, professional or business experience.
 
bulletOfficial college and university transcripts from all institutions at which applicant has studied for more than one year.
 
bulletApplicants for programs involving tutorials should submit the following additional information with their application:
bulletInformation on the proposed language program
bulletInformation regarding the proposed tutors' professional qualifications
bulletBudget for estimated tutoring expenses
bulletFor full-time tutorial programs only, evidence (such as a letter from a knowledgeable
university professor) that no appropriate language program exists in the Asian country
bulletFor full-time tutorial programs only, the applicant's proposed affiliation during the grant period with a recognized educational institution in the Asian country

bulletFebruary -  Applications reviewed by Foundation
bulletMarch - Semi-finalists notified and interviewed
bulletLate March/early April -  Finalists selected and notified of grants
Additional Information Concerning Application Materials
bulletLetters of Recommendation
bulletNo special forms are used.  A letter printed on a recommender's professional letterhead is preferred.
bulletLetters of recommendation discussing applicant's overall abilities, to the extent known by the recommender, are preferred to those which are limited to evaluating an applicant's language skills.
bulletLetters of recommendation may be included with application or sent under separate cover, but must be in unopened sealed envelopes from recommenders.
bulletRecommendations sent under separate cover should be addressed to: Mr. Griffith Way, Trustee, Blakemore Foundation, 1201 Third Avenue, Suite 4800, Seattle, Washington 98101-3266.
bulletTranscripts
bulletTranscripts may either be included with application or sent under separate cover, but must be in sealed envelopes from issuing institution.
bulletPhotocopies of transcripts from institutions located outside the United States will be accepted if official transcripts are not readily obtainable.
bulletTranscripts are required only from universities at which the applicant has studied for more than one year.
bulletA curriculum vitae or resume may be included with application for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship, but is not required.
Mailing Instructions
Application materials should be carefully addressed, using the complete mailing address of the Foundation.  In previous years materials have been delayed or even returned to the sender by the U.S. Postal Service due to a missing suite number or incorrect zip code.

Application Deadline
bulletApplications must be postmarked by December 30.
bulletAn application received after December 30 must show proof of mailing by the deadline consisting of one of the following:
bulletA legibly dated U.S. Postal Service postmark;
bulletA legible mail receipt with the date of mailing stamped by the U.S. Postal Service;
bulletA dated shipping label, invoice or receipt from a commercial carrier (Federal Express, United Parcel Service, etc.)
bulletIf December 30 falls on a Sunday or other postal holiday in the United States, then applications may be postmarked the next business day.
bulletWe recommend that applications sent from overseas be mailed well before December 30 or be sent by express delivery in order to ensure that the application is received in a timely manner.
